Shakespeare did not write exclusively. He wrote universaly , and his work was written to be performed, live, in front of an audience that had come together from a wide social spectrum.

Across the ages this universality has extended to a world wide appeal for audiences and academics alike. Why not? His theatre on the London South Bank was called “the Globe”.
From the moment I first met with the Comedias do Minho and looked out at the hills around
Paredes de Coura I thought this is a place for Lear. And as I come to know more about the
social and historical perspectives of the upper Minho I was more convinced that in that part of the Minho people still know what the land represents. A fact that is not so clear in metropolitan centres that have swallowed the land and reduced natures presence to a park and a few trees.
Communal tragedy takes place when the various parts of a society loose all relationship to one another. The rich from the poor. The young from the old.

Things change. Its natural. But when they change with inhuman rapidity, the change is not one that allows people to move together.

In Lear, things fall apart, and the various characters face the crisis. How they respond to this chaos tells us who they really are. And this is a source of shock and hope in the play.
Lee Beagley
